So happy for you that you have the things that make that easy. Good climate, no pests or deer or rabbits or crows, or robins or other birds, considerate neighbours, access to water for irrigation all year long, and apparently no issues with weeds eh? And lots of access to cheap, safe compost too huh? Oh and the tools (and storage!) to spread compost, aerate soil, weed (wait you dont get weeds!), and manage things like planter beds or poles or netting or trellises or tomatoes cages? And you grow enough that you meaningfully cut down on groceries huh? What a lucky duck.

Growing food is incredibly easy

By comrade in crisis, I grew up with a family and extended family putting blood sweat and tears into food gardens every summer my whole life. They managed to grow enough to supplement everyone’s diets most years. But they still needed groceries. And some years things went to shit when weather or pests or something else went wrong. And it was never, ever easy. So, I’m sorry. I call bullshit.

Gotta love all the “just grow your own!” comments and the lack of awareness about how analogous it is to “just pull yourself up by your bootstraps!”

Maybe there will be fewer purchases. But only if a few conditions have been met:

• there is an alternative product; and
• buyers can switch to the alternative product; and
• the alternative has characteristics that make it more desirable than the Canadian product once prices rise from tarrifs;

Or

• people can choose to not buy a product at all.

If the Canadian products are still the cheapest (or cheap enough), better enough in some other quality (e.g. not diarrhea inducing?), if buyers are locked into long-term supply agreements, or if people just need the product because there are no alternatives and not buying isn’t an option, then tariffs don’t impact total sales for those products directly.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the tarrifed goods against how elastic the demand for them is.

Biden actually ended up adding to the wall after initially stopping construction. Since Trump’s second term, wall construction has restarted with plans to complete the wall before the end of his term. None of this construction has been financed by Mexico.
