It’s insane this shit has been going on for so long and we just never really address it…

Like, the BLM protests were just a couple years ago. Nothing got accomplished then because trump was in office and Republicans won’t fix shit.

But Biden’s been in office 3.5 years, and the most that’s been done is some bullshit report that relies on police departments to honestly report problematic cops.

We need someone that will actually help, not just the absence of more damage

It’s not just recent problems, it’s stuff that neither party has wanted to do for the entire existence of America.

The federal government is supposed to resign in these departments, but we only see it happen when certain incidents get nationwide media attention.

Problem is 3.5 years of any one presidential term isn’t going to suddenly change the structural stuff. It’s unrealistic especially in the context of 8 years of bush and reagan each, plus 4 years of bush 1 AND 4 years of trump straight gassing protestors yet still potentially getting re-elected. PLUS a congress full of republicans supporting them all the way.

You will never see any structural change even remotely close to what you’re talking about, so long as people elect republicans. Even if you want to lean heavily on a single president to wave the wand, the next administration can just reverse/neuter it. Without a solid Democratic majority in congress to go along with a Democratic President you couldn’t even have the conversation.

If republicans get elected you’re going to be set back 10 more years and the conversation will be for a fraction of what could have been…

The Dems had the trifecta for just 2 years of Obama’s entire presidency. We had the supermajority for just 6 months. The conservatives filibustered everything when we didn’t hold the supermajority. That’s barely enough time to accomplish what was accomplished.

But one more important factor exists here. We (on the left) are not exactly in clear agreement on what specific policy changes need to be made in policing. So, this action will require (probably) months of debates and proposals. When we have trifectas, we usually go after the things we think we have time to actually accomplish (things that already have a clear solution).

With policing, my belief is that the core of the problems come from conservatism. Nearly every act of brutality, racism, xenophobia, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny and other abuse of power comes from conservative cops. The progressives don’t typically engage in such behaviors.

Unfortunately, less than 5% of cops (often less than 1%) in any agency are non-conservative or progressive. In smaller agencies, 100% of the cops are likely to be conservatives. If we were to make conservatism a disqualifying trait for policing nation-wide, we could eventually fix the core of the problem. We would also get support for legislative reform from the agencies themselves as the police who remain would be primarily normal people rather than conservatives. Forcing non-discriminatory behavior from conservatives through legislation alone would be nearly impossible. Conservatives don’t apply rules to themselves, so making more rules will likely not solve the problem. Getting rid of conservative police while attracting progressive police candidates will solve the core of the problem.

Openly identifying conservative ideology as the core of the problem may sound unusual, as normal people are usually too polite to say things so bluntly. But, conservatives are not a protected class and there is no place in a modern culture for their ideologies of hate and bigotry. So, we should speak openly about the problem of giving such people so much power over others. We should be specific in identifying the core of the problem so we can quickly and efficiently address it the next time we have a trifecta.

The USA is a modern house built on a foundation from the 18th century. It’s been cobbled together like the world’s biggest, most fucked up group project. I’ve seen enough Bob Vila to know that the only way to change even small things involves a full gut and rebuild.

My grandfather warned me to not run afoul of the Los Angeles sherrifs dept when I was in my early 20’s. He had stories of police brutality and corruption from when he was a kid. It’s still going on. I’ll be 60 in a couple of months.

It’s insane this shit has been going on for so long and we just never really address it…

Go watch ANY black comedian from any period of time. They’ve been telling us all along. Police just wait for everyone to move on to other things again and then it’s business as usual.

I know Dave Chappelle has got his own issues these days, but watch Chappelle’s Show sometime - a show that’s gotta be about 30 years old now. Not just the skits about police, but the throwaway lines sprinkled in just about every episode. Look for clips of RIchard Pryor on youtube… I even remember Redd Foxx getting in on it.

I wish we could see a big major event where there’s a watershed moment and immediate change, but I don’t think we’ll get that. If we were going to, 2020 would have been it. Instead we got headlines such as, “Protests about police brutality are met with wave of police brutality across US.”

The cameras everywhere are the difference now. They are clearly not solving everything immediately, but at this point their ability to go back to “business as usual” is going to come to an end, and soon, just as it becomes more and more common for police lies to end up costing cities money.

What I do think we’ll get is that policing looks very different twenty years from now than it does now. Frustratingly slow, but I do believe it will happen. 🤞

Biden cancelled student loans multiple times and was just told “lol no”

And you think he can fix state police?

Vote Biden! He won’t accomplish anything, but he’s not trump…

        Ain’t gonna be enough bruv.

If it’s true, then why does he keep lying about what he thinks he can do?

        Does he not know?

The reason he was the candidate last time, was supposedly his experience and knowing how the system works…

Did he used to and doesn’t now? Is this always how he’s been and it was just bullshit?

This is the problem with Biden, anything past a surface glance from someone not paying attention and he’s just not a good candidate

The reason he was the candidate last time

Was because he was well known enough to not give Trump another term

Do I need to put the effort in to find the polls from before the primary?

I know Bernie polled better against trump, and I believe there was a few others. And I’m at least 75% sure that “any Dem candidate” polled better than Biden.

A lot of cool designs actually. Thanks to the LAPD for their endorsement or I wouldn’t have known about it.

I’m not American so maybe different ones appeal to me (Lucky Once is fucking hilarious and the Cantona Kick is very much up my alley)

Considering how fucked the RCMP is in QC I’m surprised they didn’t get a more local focused shirt.

Policing abuses in QC have been pretty awful and indigenous friends I have in the province have an extremely negative view of the mounties.

Ah ok. But this isn’t specific to Quebec only. It’s pretty widespread across Canada.

Every police force at every level gave gained a pretty bad reputation over time. From the summit of the Americas in Quebec city, the G20 summit in Toronto, the protests against trans mountain pipeline, the maple spring in Quebec, the police have shown their true colors.

They’ve been acting like a private militia for whoever is in power at that time.
