Europe@feddit.org•Europe to remain digitally dependent, warns ForresterEnglish
1·3 hours agoWhile I don’t disagree in general, this makes me wonder how they categorized things:
Europe still designs only about 1 percent of the world’s chips and has no major chip designer of its own.
Which is technically true if you count ARM as Japanese given that it is currently owned by Softbank, but in reality it is a British company and AFAIK is doing most of their designs there as well.

Virtual Reality@lemmy.world•Discovery: Rogue Planet Is A Story-Driven Sci-Fi Shooter Coming to PC VR & Quest 3English
3·2 days agoI don’t know why studios keep making such games that really do not play to the strengths of VR as a medium.

Europe@feddit.org•How is Spain’s mass migration experiment going?English
9·2 days agoOverall not too bad, but the video entirely ignores that the housing prices have gone up in a very similar fashion in other nearby countries without the same number of immigrants. It does mention record low private investment into housing construction, but without any commentary why that might be the case, and again, that is unlikely to be caused by immigrants (on the contrary, as they should in theory provide relatively cheap labor for construction).

Europe@feddit.org•Burqa ban passes in parliament as Amnesty International warns of rights violations – Portugal ResidentEnglish
92·2 days agoBecause it isn’t a ban on burqas (which alone would also be problematic on grounds of religious freedom), but a general ban on all face covering in public. And this should be obviously a problem both for health reasons (respiratory masks) and video surveillance with face recognition.

Europe@feddit.org•Burqa ban passes in parliament as Amnesty International warns of rights violations – Portugal ResidentEnglish
118·2 days agoSo no more face masks during a respiratory pandemic? 🤦
Edit: Apparently people didn’t read the article. The proposed law was modified to forbid all sorts of face covering and the terms are so vague that is absolutely includes N95 masks and similar.

3·3 days agoI’ll be quite busy with something else tomorrow, but maybe I can add a few pixels now and then. Does the Fediauth work with Lemmy?

PeerTube@lemmy.wtf•Hardware video transcoding issues for live-streams only?
1·4 days agoThe logs are not very helpful other than confirming that it is a ffmpeg error: exit with code 234 Conversion failed, which I can’t find anything useful online about.
Edit: ah, it also gives a super long error from ffmpeg itself. Still trying to parse it.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•LLM-bot activity on question communities?English
11·4 days agoThose have been active for a few months now and usually get banned from most (non-ask) communities quite quickly.
What concerns me more is despite how obvious it is that they are bots, the posts often seem to get a lot of engagement from other accounts that are both human and some less obvious bots (or maybe lurkers).

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•Multicomms beta seem a little pointless currentlyEnglish
2·5 days agoUhm, you seem to really misunderstand why Lemmy is decentralized like it is and just want to replicate the terrible centralized communities found on Reddit.
It is no problem to find the right community for your interest right now. There are just overall not that many people using Lemmy. What you propose might seem benign in the short term, but will cause massive issue in the long run (see Reddit).

3·5 days agoShipped unripe mangoes like that taste horrible. Once you tried the real thing there is no going back to the over-priced crap you can buy in European supermarkets.
Just buy some locally grown apples or so 🤷

Self-hosting@slrpnk.net•Tutorial for setting up Iocaine (Scraper tarpit)
3·6 days agoThis tutorial seems to work for basic Iocaine, but the Nam-Shub of Enki part is failing here.
Also somehow Iocaine works for other websites here, but in front of Lemmy it currently fails. Not sure why.Edit: of course right after writing this I find the error with Lemmy and it seems to be working 🤦
