I’ve been playing NiGHTS for years and I forgot who or what the character is in the game.

Does anybody know about this character?

I only ever played the demo, and I really dug it.

Would love to try out the whole game.

Did not hear any hype though

It’s in Steam now for like $7.

It played fine on SteamDeck after I searched up which version of Proton to force it to run under, and did some controls mapping.

        That said…It’s… Just the demo.

Unintuitive boss fight mechanics, a one hit kill and a three life maximum (before the game resets itself!) means: I just kept repeating the demo for the vast majority of my play time.

I could watch a tutorial on the rest of the bosses, but honestly the later levels (that I have reached) are just different paint added to first level.

6/10 - It’s surprisingly good for being one of the earliest attempts at a making a 3d game.

If I was going to replay it, I would seach up a boss fight tutorial first, to save myself time. It’s just not worth playing through the whole game each time I want 3 more chances to guess each under-communicated boss mechanic.

I’ve only actually played the first game, but as I understand it, NiGHTS is a high-ranking Nightmaren just like the monstrous bosses they fight. NiGHTS happens to be powerful enough to be independent. Whenever the other Nightmaren mug a dreaming visitor, if the visitor keeps hold of one of their Ideyas, NiGHTS finds it more fun to help the visitor wreck everything instead.

Edit: corrected NiGHTS to they/them pronouns (and while I’m here, you can still get the Steam version of NiGHTS for free)

NiGHTS is the character that killed 3DO.

By 1996 the Saturn was obviously out and floundering. “Sega kids” were burned-out on years of short-lived gimmicks. “Nintendo kids” only saw three games come out in any given month, but invariably one of them awesome. But anyone who took a chance on Sony was spoiled for choice. Really, the PSX’s design was such an effective abuse of simple gimmicks, you’d think they were the first to deliver games in color. Suffice it to say Sega was not having a good time.

3DO asked them to drop the Saturn and join the hardware manufacturer alliance for their new standard of video games - the M2. They could keep making great first-party games without begging for third-party support. Sega almost did this. They were in talks with Panasonic for months. This was all kept very quiet, at the time, because the mere suggestion would kill demand for the Saturn. They still pursued it. It nearly happened. But allegedly… during one of the final meetings before it all fell apart… a bunch of Sega executives showed up in-person at 3DO headquarters. Nobody told the staff, of course. It was all hush-hush. So these random Japanese businessmen walk through the office around lunchtime, and briefly exchange some surprised glances with a bunch of American developers - who were crowded around a Saturn playing NiGHTS Into Dreams.

    Sega said no.

Six years later they were a second party for Nintendo.

I had the original game and loved it. Initially hated it because it wasn’t what I was expecting, but since I paid so much I played it and got into it. Fun game.
