My friend lives in Guam. Their electric price is around 0.27 per kWh. I’m getting 0.46 - 0.50 per kWh with PGE.
How is it cheaper to send refined oil by tanker to a tiny island in the Pacific than it is to get electricity in a state with massive solar, wind installs and multiple refineries?
I’m guessing public ownership of the Guam utility is part of the answer.
PG&E is evil. I can’t believe the state did absolutely nothing after they pretty much burnt half of butte county to a crisp, was a good opportunity for the state to take control of them.
And San Diego with SDGE is even higher. It’s time to take back control.
Are there any nonprofits working towards that? I’m seriously willing to drop some money to try to get them out of limit their power.
Some friends and I got several hundred signatures in contribution to a larger petition for the SD county to take over SDGE
I heard about that. Though I think first steps are to kneecap sdge’s profitability through other measures so that a takeover is actually reasonable.
PG&E is terrible. It is nuts how they have come after solar here. Solar was the only thing that gave me relief from their price gouging.
Where the hell in CA do you live? I’m only paying 0.34/kWh at peak times (5-8 pm) and sub 20 cents the rest of the day.

Yeah, fortunately some of those counties have better options. Sacramento has SMUD, Stanislaus county has MID and TID, Merced county has M(erced)ID. Those are all way cheaper than PG&E, and those are just the ones I personally know of.
There’s hope on the horizon for other communities like Manteca, where SSJID is working to develop their own electrical service. It’s hard to say at this point if anything will actually come of that, though.
How many times has Guam burned down cities with their electricity tho
I haven’t heard of Guam turning suburbs into hellscapes with faulty gas lines either
Fuck it’s been that long since san bruno it faded into the noise of their other crimes.
