Does this mean we should try to pass legislation that reaches across the aisle?
[Pause for laughter]
Okay, seriously though, what stocks should we all short during the next shutdown we create?
"Following Mr Johnson’s departure, the House will have 219 Republicans, 213 Democrats and three vacancies, which means that the GOP will only be able to lose two votes on any party-line issues if there’s full attendance. "
I’m expecting another GOP resignation very soon because the GOP resignation after that will be the blamed for giving the house to the Democrats. Its like musical chairs and there’s only 1 chair left for all GOP Representatives considering resignation.
They still have a 6-seat lead, and even if two or three resignations follow they’ll still have a 1-seat buffer on party-line votes.
The stupid caucus will abuse that buffer.
Each fewer Republican bolsters the absolute crazy wingnut side that torpedoed McCarthy to torpedo whatever else they want so it matters, but only because it makes it even more likely that they will have to compromise with the Democrats.
This is a good thing.
Your statement seems to make sense to me, but I’m not sure how the article’s statement is factual then.
If two Republicans vote with the Democrats, the Republicans still have a majority, but the vote is split if three decide to vote with the Democrats. (219 - 3 = 216; 213 + 3 = 216)
I came to the same math, but the article states “on any party-line issues”. If its a party-line issue, doesn’t that define that all the party will vote on one side or the other?
I’m watching the GOP very closely with this Epstein list that’s about to go public. I don’t think this is unrelated.
Hmmm. Who thinks early February budget decision is going to be even more contentious now that the margins for Republicans to not self-sabotage is even slimmer?
The fact that so many of them are resigning mid term is scaring me a bit, is it simple fatigue with this insanity? I can’t say I’d blame anyone for that despite their complicity in it, but I worry they are privy to some information and are the getting the fuck out of dodge before it gets dicey. The temperature of their base? The plans of their cohorts? That’s probably paranoia but I have come to expect the worst and most ridiculous
Okay bye
They are going to have a hard time moving legislation, especially the big votes.
Have you seen this current House’s record? They haven’t been moving much of anything. It’s on track to be the least productive session of the House ever, even without an even slimmer majority.
True, but they have to move a lot of budget in the next 60 days.
Johnson is gonna have to rely on Democrat votes once more. It’s hilarious. I wouldn’t be shocked if a couple more Republicans retire before it begins. They’ll end up giving the majority to the Democrats before it’s all over with.
Sthaaappp. You’re getting me all hot. 🥵
The most extreme Republicans will boot Johnson if he compromises like they did with McCarthy, which will probably cause another shutdown like the extreme wingnuts want.
I’m fantasizing about those idiots booting Johnson due to a compromise and not having a majority, so speakership goes to Jeffries.
I’ve wondered if the GOP losing the majority could be a strategy. They can then go into the 2024 election cycle ranting about how bad the Democrats failed, etc.
It’s way harder to actually govern than it is to just throw stones at people actually working.
It’s like that scene in Liar Liar where Carey says “I’m kicking my ass!” They’re literally the toddler on bicycle puts stick in spokes meme
