Certain Democrats remain inexplicably in denial about Biden and his brain leaking out of his ears during a live debate and even internal polling showing repeatedly he was almost certainly going to lose badly.

Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre lambasted Democratic leadership for attacking Joe Biden like a ā€œfiring squadā€ at a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics forum Wednesday, saying the party should have united behind the former president.

ā€œI have never seen anything like that,ā€ she said. ā€œIt was truly, truly unfortunate. And I think it hurt us more than folks realized to have done that.ā€

Jean-Pierre attended a discussion with spring IOP fellow Brittany Shepherd and Anoushka Chander ā€™25 ā€” her first public event since leaving the White House in January.

Jean-Pierre stood by Bidenā€™s achievements, his cognitive fitness, and his decision to run for re-election during the talk. She echoed statements from Michael C. Donilon ā€” a senior advisor to Biden and a current IOP fellow ā€” who defended the former president on the same stage just two weeks ago.

ā€œI believe in what we were trying to get done,ā€ Jean-Pierre said. ā€œI would not have come back into the administration, I donā€™t think, for anybody else.ā€

And from Donilonā€™s talk:

Michael C. Donilon, the chief strategist behind Joe Bidenā€™s 2024 campaign, said Democratic leadership ā€œlost its mindā€ when they ousted Biden from the partyā€™s ticket, arguing he was their best chance at keeping the White House.

ā€œThe Democratic primary voters chose Joe Biden to be the nominee of the Democratic Party,ā€ said Donilon, a spring fellow at the Institute of Politics. ā€œThe Democratic party leadership, and the biggest funders in America, didnā€™t.ā€

In a wide-ranging post mortem at the IOP Thursday evening, Donilon remained adamant that the former president would ā€œstill be the bestā€ for the job ā€“ despite his poor performance in a June debate.

ā€œLots of people have terrible debates,ā€ he said. ā€œUsually, the party doesnā€™t lose its mind. But thatā€™s what happened ā€” it just melted down.ā€

Donilon, a member of Bidenā€™s inner circle for over 40 years, denounced claims that the presidentā€™s acuity and judgment declined as an ā€œimpressionā€ perpetuated by the media.

ā€œIt was getting written as this fact, ā€˜Oh, Biden was mentally impaired,ā€™ā€ Donilon said. ā€œI donā€™t know how much time any of those people spent with him ā€” I know how much time I spent with him. I know what I saw.ā€

Reminder the White House spent his second term limiting access to Biden, not showing him negative polling and negative stories, and denying there were any problems until he turned a question on abortion into incoherent mumbling about immigrants murdering women.

In 2020 Biden SWORE heā€™d be a one term President (by choice), and while he wasnā€™t my first choice I was able to at least feel a little better about voting for him because of that promise (but letā€™s face it, Iā€™d have voted for a streaming pile of dog shit against Trump, just not felt quite as good about it).

As soon as he broke that promise and tried to run again I guess you could say I became part of that firing squad and wanted him gone.

It was right for him to not run again, so him being forced out really isnā€™t the problem people make it out to be. Heā€™s too damn old.

The problem was that the Democrats didnā€™t find a suitable replacement, and for the second election in the past decade, it cost them the race.

I still think Harris couldā€™ve won if she had a populist message, but that wouldā€™ve scared the corporate donors too much.

The hubris is just absolutely deafening. And none of them realize it. And theyā€™re still trying to claim a semblance of leadership. Itā€™s bold, if nothing else.

If only it had been an actual firing squad for his crimes in Gaza.
