  • I can agree with “Zionists don’t represent humanity”.

I take your point that dehumanization by itself is a tiny part of what the Nazis did, it isn’t unique to them, and that the surrounding power dynamics are important. My comment was a “quick, slightly snarky” reply 😉

I do think that dehumanization is a dangerous tactic because, while it might have been a small part of the Nazi regime’s actions, it seems like it was crucial in order for them to get social & moral licence for a lot of the rest of their actions (as happened during the development of racism, and is now happening against migrants).

And, while recognizing that not every Zionist is Jewish, the amount of antisemitism that still exists (and the sad number of people who just swap out “jews” for “zionists” to get cover to keep pushing the same antisemitic conspiracy theories) does seem to add up to a bit of “vulnerability” as you put it, which seems to add to the danger of dehumanization.

  • That’s because liberalism isn’t a halfway point between socialism and conservatism it is, to misquote Stalin, fascism with a happy face sticker on it.

Most “western” countries’ governments have spent the last ~100 years waging outright war on socialism through coups, assassinations, imprisonments, and propaganda.

Political (and historical) education has been hacked away so much that most people couldn’t give a coherent definition of “socialism” anyway - and socialist policies poll extremely well if you short-circuit the propaganda by not mentioning the forbidden s-word.

  • Reality moving faster than satire once again:

Responding to the US shooting attack that killed two Israeli Embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt promises that the Jewish community will not be intimidated by the attack.

“This shooting strikes a nerve because it comes after an unrelenting, ongoing campaign of hate and harassment targeting the Jewish community simply because of who we are and what we believe”

🪿 What exactly do you “believe” Jonathan?

  • HN commenter nails it:

Any thoughts on the aspect of tool like this being, gosh, I don’t know else to say it except evil?

To some extent, you’ve sanitized the business of ruining people’s lives. This is the meat grinder. YOU as its creator don’t fear it because it’s your pet basilisk.

But make no mistake, your pet is a killer monster the only real purpose of which is to but a rubber stamp on every kind of bias while removing accountability for doing violence to real people’s lives. If you get rich with this, at least now you can’t say nobody told you where the money was coming from.

Think about it. What would you say if it made a mistake and ruined your life? “We’re sorry, the AI says you’re not allowed to have credit anymore.” “We’re sorry, you met the criteria to be targeted for extermination by a drone.” “We’re sorry, the AI scored you 8/10 on the deport-with-no-due-process chart, so off to no-rights terrorist prison.”

You’d care if it was you, but the fact is that you won’t have any way of knowing when your client uses your product to ruin or even end a life. A counter won’t tick up by one. You’ll just be there thinking “another happy customer.” Now that’s vom-inducing.

    1. Because USians are so terrorized about losing their jobs (and losing housing, food, medical care, education), have such nonexistent or useless unions, and almost no legal protections from termination, that they’ll do close to anything their boss tells them.

    2. Lifetimes of propaganda has taught everyone that “organizing” is something only done by commies / criminals / fools, and the only legitimate way to change society is to carry on stoically, individually doing what capitalism demands of them while waiting for a charismatic politician / business leader / media celebrity to pop up and nudge things along the inevitable, barely perceptible, slope of forward progress.

    3. The “just following orders” excuse worked out pretty great for the majority of Nazis the first time (rare overrepresented examples notwithstanding), why would it not again?
