But instead of regulating the companies driven by profit, why not let essential utilities be under the control of the people, paid for by taxes? It seems odd from a US perspective because I swear everytime there is something like that here there are people that couldn’t evacuate or didn’t want to and end up dying. People often can’t afford to or don’t have anywhere else to go so they don’t evacuate. For example, a landslide in Washington state in 2014 killed 43 people, but there might not have been as many warning signs.
