  • I like your honesty. So let’s go further with this:

    See, you’re so deep in the sauce you’ve lost all perspective;

No, that’s true for you: what your average computer user is, that’s what you think anyone not proficient with computers is. News flash: “average person” is wildly different depending on where it is measured ©

No, windows users hate the constant restarting for updates, if it all happened in the background they wouldn’t even notice. Just look at Mint.

So, updates (edit: reboot) are needed for it to work properly. What was your point again?

    This is sophistic and stupid

No, this is something anyone paying attention to words knows.

If you’re so desperate you’re reaching for “words don’t mean anything akshully” you already know you’re wrong

Lol. I already know I am right, having spent years learning languages

You are not a user, you are a power user like me and everyone else in this thread. Regular users don’t go online to discuss their OS. It’s the height of narcissism to think you’re the person being talked about here.

True, I am a power user. So I am not using arguments like “if I can do it, anyone can”. Also not true, the “think you’re the person being talked about here” is your invention about my thoughts. You did not disappoint, thank you

  • Oh, so you are from one of my favourite gangs - “terminal is scary and a no-go”. Okay, I am yet in a good mood, so

apt, pacman etc are all commands that require a minimal understanding of the terminal, and the average person does not have that

they don’t require that. “open terminal, type this incantation, press enter” requires zero knowledge of how any of that works. Also, “average person” is wildly different depending on where it is measured

Regular users just want it to update itself in the background

Bullshit. You ever seen threads of how windows users hate its forced updates fuckery?

The only thing they understand about “apt upgrade -u” is the word ‘upgrade’ - the rest might as well be ancient sumerian to them

So let it be sumerian. Only thing anyone cares about is they know how to use it

Even remembering the short phrase is infinitely more complex than pressing a clearly labelled button

First - bullshit. Second - “clearly labeled” my ass, because human language is not maths, any text can be understood very differently depending on a number of things

You will never convert a single user by trying to convince them to use any form of CLI over a GUI

That made me chuckle. Go on, give me more insights about my life, it is so funny

  • Same. “This guy says something I wish to be true? Yay, I will vocally believe whatever he says without any questioning” - da fuck. Try breaking a tree with your bare hands just because you believe you are stronger and see how that goes. Why would anything else work any different?

  • I am not downvoting only because you are already prepared for that

One should assume everything they say on the internet is public, even “private” messages on a social media app

Factually and sadly - true. But this is not how things should be

The person who sent the message needed that reality check after saying something so stupid

Nah. There is a difference between literal meaning and the real thought and intention behind words

Though this was a false alarm, it showed a semblance of responsibly from a social media company that is typically evil and indifferent

It only showed the company to be evil and indifferent. The evidence towards this interpretation is that at least I have not once heard of any actual crime-about-to-happen they stopped. So they can fuck right off with this

It is not the fault of the social media company that the FBI chose to act on the information

It is their fault for violating their users’ privacy in a manner that does no good and much harm. It is even bigger fault to let any part of the process between “someone sent message” and “it has been reported to officials” be handled by automation without any human overseing. It is going to be even bigger fault if there was actually a human involved and they just let this happen
