I agree completely. We really need to make onboarding to the fediverse as painless as possible. If there’s a barrier to entry the general audience will gravitate towards tech savvy folks. That’s cool and all but what made Twitter and Reddit so good was the diversity of voices.

There were tech folks but also senior citizens, people who don’t usually use social networks and those with marginalized voices. Both platforms started with mostly tech folks, Twitter didn’t really blow up until the color revolutions, reddit really came into its own after the digg exodus.

The fediverse is making big gains because of both platforms thoroughly shitting the bed but we’re not the only game in town. Threads has an extremely low barrier to entry but it’s an entry into a Max Headroom style blipvert hellscape. Making our barrier to entry as low as possible could really help us “rescue” those users.

I’m a compulsive fort starter. I usually retire them after 4 or 5 years. my latest fort, like all my others, would be well thought out and separated. Each pair of floors would be for an industry and it’s associated stockpiles. It would be beautiful and symmetrical!

Then it turned into my regular style fort, sprawling but with healthy cloth and food industries. My dwarves just want to make sure no one in their world is cold and hungry. We’re subterranean grandmas that worry you’re getting so skinny! Have these roasts and put on a coat, dear.

Once people are in there then we start talking up moving to and instance that fits their style. Kind of like picking a fighter character then picking a specialization at level 2. That’s still a hard sell on Lemmy and Kbin where we don’t have the account export/import/redirect tools that Mastodon has. I could see them coming pretty soon though.

There’s always some people walking around dead malls, even if the mall died years ago. Reddit will be around for at least 5-10 more years but it’s overall influence will start to decline. It will be slowly at first but I’d bet three years from now reddit will just be seen as a forum site for scammers, bots, incels and alt-right lunatics (more than it is now).

Bluesky and Threads are perfect examples of “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” I’ve got no sympathy for folks who will be blindsided when those platforms start squeezing them almost immediately.

Tech bros big mad when they can’t continue to exploit a workforce and have to play by the rules. “How can we disrupt if we can’t cheat and steal from our workers and customers?”

The issue with this approach is that it further entrenches gaps that are already there. The best predictor of economic outcome is zip code. That’s because schools are funded by local property tax. Live in a wealthier area, get better schools. Better schools lead to a better outcome. Schools in poorer districts stay poorer. It’s a system that is self perpetuating.

Replacing affirmative action with something that is strictly income based could help but that ignores other systemic biases that are based on race rather that income.

I feel like if we’re ending affirmative action we should also put in place more restrictions on legacy admissions which is just affirmative action for dumb, rich kids and represents a much bigger chunk of students than affirmative action ever did.

I played Smushi Come Home. It’s about a little mushroom making their way home. It’s a platformer with some light puzzle elements. Really reminded me of A Short Hike, both in vibes and length. It clocked in at about 3 hrs but was mad cozy.

I’ve never used quantum stockpiles because I’m lazy. My forts end up sprawling and no amount of planning can keep them from turning into asymmetrical messes.

I’ve been trying to set up better stockpile management like Tekkud on Twitch does which sometimes works. Mostly my forts just saunter along. I’m going to pretend that is an aesthetic I’m going for.

I definitely agree. Back in school I learned that a Newbury medal in a book meant that a dog and/or parental figure will die. I feel like it’s easier to make people feel something when the feeling is bad. Also joyful things are sometimes thought to be lesser or simple.

If anyone is a fan of scifi I recommend checking out Becky Chambers. A Psalm for the Wild Built is an optimistic solar punk book that will warm your heart.

It’s well known but usually taught in the later years of high school (15-17 year olds). I don’t think they’re teaching things like the Tulsa massacre, the Wilmington massacre, Rosewood or the MOVE bombing in schools. Maybe in AP classes which are advanced placement for college credit.

Everything we learn about the Civil Rights movement is shown in black and white and taught as if it solved the problem. We definitely aren’t taught that some of the legal reforms put forth in response the the nationwide riots after MLK’s assassination.

Even that Atlantic ocean couldn’t stop Jim Crow. Fascinating story, hope it can still be taught in history classes in the coming years.

Lentils and rice. Saute 2 tablespoons of cumin seeds and 2 tablespoons of coriander powder in some neutral oil. Add 5 cups water, salt and pepper, bring to a boil. Put in a cup of brown lentils and reduce to simmer. Simmer for 10 min. Add a cup of rice, cover and cook on low for 20 min.

Serve with caramelized onions and yogurt if you’re fancy. Skip that and serve with cheese if you’re me. I shamelessly stole this and bastardized it from Christopher Kimball’s mujaddara recipe.

It sounds like more work than it is. Toast spices, 5c water, 1c lentils for 10 min, 1c rice for 20 min, bob’s your uncle.

This looks awesome. I feel like it would be worth $40usd but I’m betting Nintendo will be asking $70usd. For 70, I’ll stick to the SNES.

A Short Hike has dialog and a shorter play time but you can just ignore that and soar around the island. It’s got an isometric view with a pixel art style. I really enjoy it. I play it when I’m hung over.
