I’m running an instance and as a software it’s OK. But you never know if your subscription tab has nothing new because there is a bug in the ActivityPub code or just because nobody is posting on peertube.

Another thing is that most of my video watching I do on the TV but there is no app for android on the TV which give you a UI like the many apps streaming providers offer. So at least for me it’s limited to very seldom watching something on the laptop when I remember.

Discover ability is another problem, similar to Mastodon it’s difficult to find new people to watch. That is solved much better on Lemmy with the communities.

The biggest problem I have with peertube besides videos buffering or simply not loading at all is the fact creators just cross post their youtube content which is a worse experience than just watching on youtube with sponsor block.

I was going to say: “I’m honestly surprised you’re able to find any content at all. I want PeerTube to succeed, but I can find nothing worth watching on it.” But logging back into PeerTube, I do see a semi-prominent YouTuber I occasionally watch on there called Shifter… And there’s also The Linux Experiment. (Edit: And RMTransit.) And Flipboard discussing fediverse stuff. But it’s still not nearly enough. The only other channel I see consistently in Trending is someone called Lety Does Stuff, which from what I can gather is a generic reaction channel serving as a front for affiliate links and an NSFW Patreon. (Not sure if I can block those from appearing, since they’re spammy as hell.) For high-production video essay stuff, I already have Nebula, so I don’t mind its absence here too much.

The indie OC on PeerTube could at least be interesting from a kind of early YouTube Wild West perspective, except that it’s just so sparse. For example, there’s a quaint channel I found called Cohan Magazine that does a bunch of camping and wildlife stuff. Not my thing, but I think it adds to the indie vibe. But a lot of the OC is let’s plays, and that to me feels basically like filler content.

It just has that issue where unlike posting on Lemmy, Mastodon, etc., creating content is much harder, so it just can’t get enough momentum. Granted I think PeerTube right now might be in a better place than even a couple months ago when I last checked, but it’s definitely a slow burn.

Why? With YT blocking VPNs and Unis now, I really appreciate YT content getting mirrored to peer tube.

      I wish everyone did this.

Youtube keeps trying to add friction but it’s still better for most people as a direct result because it makes the content worse without youtube specific plugins. I can’t imagine what needing a vpn would look like because it’s never been a good experience whenever I’ve tried in the past, I’m just lucky I don’t really need one I guess.

mirroring content is never a bad idea.

Can anyone recommend a peer tube instance worth trying? Preferably one that allows registration.

    Peertube is really really great.

I think what would help a lot is if creators had the ability to say you can watch x amount of videos without supporting me and then you support me through whatever platform.

It would then be really viable for creators and consumers. The creators are getting such a small amount of money from every video watched on Youtube, they would get more there.

What’s the difference between this and Framatube which has a similar logo and is an option on Newpipe?

Are there any with non privacy invasive ads that are able to cover the costs od infrastructure, so I can use it with peace of mind that my data won’t get erased?
