Looking to upgrade my trusty 1070Ti. I use my pc for RPGs (Borderlands, Hogwarts Legacy) , VR fps (Alyx, Arizona Sunshine) and VR simracing (F1 23).

Deciding between ASUS Dual 4070 (@ €600) or ASUS TUF 7800XT.

Benchmarks don’t really tell the whole story because they rarely include DLSS3, but the games I play don’t really support that anyway. TUF is a better cooler, but bulkier.

I can also just not buy anything and wait for the 4070 Super to come along.

Thoughts?

If you’re planning to use Windows, Nvidia is probably the better choice because of the RTX and DLSS features.

If you are based want Linux, AMD is the winner because the Nvidia driver has issues, some of its features don’t work, and Wayland compatibility is spotty.

AMD also has FreeSync, and (in my experience) it has much wider support compared to its GSync competitor.

Hogwarts Legacy does support DLSS FG (Frame generation).

In general it’s always better to wait, especially with the new cards around the corner (and corresponding price cuts).

You left out your resolution, do you play at 1080p? 1440p? 4K? What refresh rate? The decision largely hinges on that, for example for the games you listed at 1440p and 144hz+ even a 4070 is on the weaker side.

Thanks for your input! I have a 1440p capable monitor at 165Hz refresh rate but I’m fine with anything above 75fps.

I’m an AMD fan, but don’t think the 7800 is in a good price:performance ratio position. A 4070 I think is going to be the better option, especially considering Nvidia’s frame generation tech hits a bit harder.

I’d wait for the super though. If you get that, it will last you easily as long as your 1070ti has. Unfortunately I think the price will be more than €600

One thing to consider: Nvidia has the better drivers and software on Windows by a long shot. Unless you want to game on Linux, then go AMD.
