I’ve been gaming on a fresh linux install for a couple weeks now and have anecdotally noticed this but hadn’t really put any effort into being sure, so it’s nice to see data. I also notice other weird shit like Discord loads faster, though that’s minor, but the big difference is that it connects in 3-5 seconds once it loads instead of 15-30 on windows. No idea what would even affect that, it’s the same internet connection (gigabit fiber.)

It’s not the internet, it’s all the checks Windows does with files and packages. Potentially these reasons: Constant verification of Discord’s certificates, checking data downloaded for viruses, checking for updates, checking for your ownership of the client app etc. before giving you access.

By far the biggest issue with Windows’ performance* is its antivirus, known in the Task Manager and Resource Monitor as msmpeng.exe. Appreciated, but not wanted. Not when it slows many programs’ opening or calculating performance and reads so many goddamn bytes on all your drives per second that it makes using Windows with a HDD impractical.

*Their overbearing attempts to farm, control and fleece users for marketing data, DRM purposes and money, respectively, are the biggest issue with the company. It’s classic corporate capitalism, to reduce the service quality while maintaining income, and to fuck over end users while protecting business interests. This is also connected to why gaming anti-cheat services don’t work on Linux. For these reasons, pertaining to Microsoft, I’m out.

        Interesting, that makes sense.

Yeah, that stuff is a big part of why I wanted to get away from windows. They’ve been steadily shoveling bloat into it since… well, since Win95, but it’s gotten particularly bad of late. I’ve been on Win10 because I refused to upgrade to 11 and now they’re ending support for 10, so fuck it, I’m jumping ship.

Sometimes the wifi drivers work better in Linux than Windows. They get a lot of eyes as Linux is more a server distro than Windows is, so internet performance is a much higher priority. Also much less tracking which helps.

Kernel level anti-cheats are the only thing holding me back. Need to keep wife happy and no room for another computer desk yet.

A Steam Deck could fit on a shelf beside the computer, on the computer desk…

Come to the SteamDeck side…we have…just so many games.

and speed of patching, and in in-place upgrades, and in adding new packages, and in start-up, and in reboot, and in HW requirements, and in … I can’t really think of anything I use/need/do that windows does better.
