I wouldn’t have expected Balatro to pull me in as much as it did, but here I am. I wasn’t sure which platform to get the game for since I do usually play quite a bit on my phone but thought the small screen would be annoying at times, so I got the game for my iPad - best decision I could have made. My hype for the game has “died down” a little in that I don’t play the game for several hours on end, everyday like I used to when it released for mobile devices, but whenever I have some downtime and don’t know what else to watch/listen to while cooking, for example, I’m watching Roffle. Really just such an amazing game.
I’ve been playing Slay the Spire since late 2019ish and my main platform is my phone where I’ve racked up over 200h. Slay the Spire might the contender for one of the best games ever made, I feel like - definitely one of the best card games and rogue-likes/lites. I’ve beaten A20 on all characters expect Ironclad on my phone and am currently working on doing the same on my iPad. Didn’t like Ironclad too much at first, but I’ve been grinding him these past few months and am actually enjoying my time more than I would have expected. Really looking forward to StS2
Both games are fantastic. Monster Train is also a good card based roguelike game, with Monster Train 2 coming out on Steam this week. Not sure what the first game is like on mobile, but could be worth giving a try.
I’ve heard of Monster Train and it being called a better game than StS overall. Not sure how that could be possible but sure. Don’t quite like the visuals personally
I wouldn’t say monster train was better than StS, but it is definitely a banger on the same level as StS. The visuals are definitely tacky though. It has the feel of a shovelware game some dev loved so unreasonably much they actually managed to make it good and release it for real. I’d call it a deck builder before I’d call it a roguelite, but then again I feel that way about StS as well
Update: I got the game on iPad and have been playing it non-stop. I’ve unlocked all classes and actually win quite a few run now (only been playing on “ascension” 0-2 so far to unlock cards and champions). I think Remnants might be my favourite, and I feel like both the regular as well the exiled champion are bangers. Not quite sure what to pair it with yet, but I got a win with all of them except the morsels and all seemed pretty good thus far. I have a hunch that morsels paired with the exiled Remants might be pretty strong.
Thanks again for the recommendation - been having lots of fun!
Hell yeah! You picked a good time to get into it, monster train 2 released a few days ago and it’s an improvement on the first one imo. I’ve also been playing a ton in the last few days, haha. I think the pyreborn are my favorite so far; the dragons hoard and greed dragons tickle my brain just right.
Heh, “hell yeah”
Yea, I saw. Sadly not available for iPad (yet?), so I’ll have to stick to MT1 for now, though I’d wager I’ll have enough game to last me a while. Don’t know how playable the game is on PS5 (probably not getting the Switch version), so iPad would pretty much be the best platform for me.
How do the new clans stack up to the old ones for you? And would you say I should be “in a rush” to get the second game?
The confirm button for new unlocks being “Hell yeah!” is unironically one of my favorite little details in the game lol.
Yeah, if you’re enjoying it so far I’d say mt1 is more than enough game to keep you entertained for a while. I play both on steam, so I can’t comment on any other platform version of the game sadly.
New clans vs old: hard to tell right now, as the novelty of the new clans means they’ll be my favorite for a bit no matter what. I will say that like, with mt1 I’d compare the clans based on complexity. Like id say hellhorned generally has a fairly straightforward gameplan and melting remnant are generally pretty complex to play. In mt2 it feels like each clan has access to simple and complicated gameplans, and I’m assuming that will give them more replayability for me.
I don’t think you should be in a rush to get the second one, especially given you have and are enjoying mt1. The core gameplay of mt2 is the same as mt1; it’s basically a huge card expansion pack and a minor system overhaul designed to give the player more choice and fix some of the late game balance issues the first has. I also wouldn’t stop you if you wanted to rush for the second one, it is clearly a more polished game made by the same dev but with more experience when they made it. If you want my exact reccomendation, play mt1 until you’ve gotten your fill/are looking for more and then look into mt2.
It’s good that the developers cater to both new as well as experienced players. Doesn’t exclude any one of them from having a good time.
Gotcha, so it’s like a DLC+ and a 2.0 update for its game systems kinda thing. Sounds good, in my books, and if the game works well, why change it up too much, right?
I’ll be sure to get my value out of the first game and then, if it’s released on iPad sometime, I’ll maybe get the sequel. Thanks for your thoughts!
I might have to give it a shot if it’s that good
