Actually a pretty sad story when you read past the headline. Poor git.

due to the river being in, operations had to be slowed down

I’m not British. Can someone explain what this means? When is a river “in”?

It’s related to tides. The river being in would suggest the tide was in / high. So a lot more water to slow down operations.

I guess the lesson is, if you’re gonna steal a canoe and don’t know how to swim, steal a life vest, too.

It is sad that someone died, of course, but I don’t think ‘poor git’. I think ’ don’t steal shit that isn’t yours, particularly canoes if you intend to use them and can’t swim’.
