LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.—Aging leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties should step aside and make room for a new generation, actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday.
Speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference, Schwarzenegger alluded to recent instances of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell freezing and falling silent, without naming him, and said people in that position should “start thinking about stepping aside and letting a newer generation step in and fill the vacuum.”
Asked whether he thinks President Biden, 80, should run for president, Schwarzenegger said he wouldn’t tell the politician not to run, “but I just believe that we should look for the new breed in both parties.”
He stopped short of endorsing a Republican presidential hopeful but encouraged California Gov. Gavin Newsom to “jump in” and praised Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—who earlier this month ended his bid for the Democratic nomination for president and announced plans to seek the White House as an independent.
Schwarzenegger said Kennedy, who advised him on environmental policy, is someone who understands business as much as the environment. Schwarzenegger was married for more than two decades to Maria Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family.
“There’s a lot of interesting characters out there that are out there trying to win,” he said.
Addressing war in the Middle East, Schwarzenegger said the U.S. is doing the right thing by supporting Israel.
“They have to fight back because they have to survive. I’m 100% behind them,” he said.
The 76-year-old bodybuilder, actor, investor, philanthropist and politician has reinvented himself many times during a decades-long career. In a book published this month, Schwarzenegger wrote that the driving force behind all of his decisions is the idea of being useful, advice from his father.
In the book, “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,” he pushes further into his latest chapter as a self-help expert.
“When you have a clear vision of where you want to go, you don’t even need discipline,” he said.
Schwarzenegger said he is aware of the advent of AI in Hollywood and has heard a fake version of his voice. Whether or not his likeness will be used by AI in the future is a point his children will have to negotiate, he said.
“I will not be around, even though I want to live forever,” he said.
