ā€¢ Like many Trek episodes, this oneā€™s title was inspired by a great work of art, specifically ā€œGarth Marenghiā€™s Darkplaceā€.

ā€¢ The Ferengi lower deckers we see are cataloguing Cardassian, Klingon and Romulan handheld disruptors before apparently throwing them out.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Cardassian weapons were frequently called phasers, not disruptors in dialogue in DS9, such as in the episodes ā€œProfit and Lossā€, though in ā€œReturn to Graceā€ Kira refers to them as ā€phase-disruptorā€ weapons.

ā€¢ The Ferengi have a scaled down Genesis device which among the weapons theyā€™re discarding. In ā€œStar Trek: The Search for Spockā€, Commander Kruge believed Genesis was designed as a Federation weapon.

ā€¢ The Mysterious Threat appears again, making this the fourth attack since its introduction in ā€œTwovixā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Ferengi, Jeef, implies that he was aware that the Mysterious Threat was going to be there and heā€™d made a deal with whomever is operating it.

ā€¢ The bridge of the Ferengi ship appears to be a recreation of the one seen aboard Quarkā€™s shuttle, Quarkā€™s Treasure in ā€œLittle Green Menā€, which was later used for Bruntā€™s shuttle in ā€œThe Magnificent Ferengiā€.

ā€¢ As is tradition with Ferengi episodes, weā€™re going to get some Rules of Acquisition. The Rules of Acquisition were first mentioned in ā€œThe Nagusā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Rule 62: ā€The riskier the road, the greater the profit.ā€ - ā€œRules of Acquisitionā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Rule 10: *ā€Greed is eternal.ā€ - ā€œProphet Motiveā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Rule 8: ā€Small print leads to large risk.ā€ - This is the first time itā€™s been said in canon, but was included in the ā€œThe Ferengi Rules of Acquisitionā€ reference book written by Ira Steven Behr

ā€¢ The USS Toronto NCC-70494 is a Parliament-class starship. We first saw the USS Vancouver in ā€œCupidā€™s Errant Arrowā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Despite the fact that Parliament-class ships appear to all take their names from Canadian capital cities, the USS Winnipeg is a Daedalus-class, and the USS Regina is an Oberth-class, seen in ā€œAn Embarrassment of Dooplersā€ and ā€œFirst First Contactā€ respectively.

ā€¢ Capā€™n Freeman records the Stardate as 58901.5 in her log.

ā€¢ This is our first view of Ferenginar from orbit.

ā€¢ Admiral Vassery was introduced in ā€œMoist Vesselā€.

ā€¢ ā€It makes Moab IV inside the dome look like Moab IV outside the dome.ā€ Moab IV was a human colony built as a planned society fostered with eugenics introduced in ā€œThe Masterpiece Societyā€.

ā€¢ Itā€™s Rom! From Star Trek! Rom is played by Max GrodĆ©nchik, who played Rom in DS9, showing up in the series premiere, ā€œThe Emissaryā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ GrodĆ©nchik played several other Frenengi as well: his first Trek role was as Sovak in ā€œCaptainā€™s Holidayā€; he played Par Lenor in ā€œThe Perfect Mateā€; finally he appeared as Grand Nagus Gint in Quarkā€™s dream in ā€œBody Partsā€.

ā€¢ Itā€™s Leeta! From Star Trek! Leeta once again portrayed by Chase Masterson. The character first appeared in ā€œExplorersā€.

ā€¢ Rom and Leeta are accompanied by a Hupyrian attendant, as both Zek and Brunt were when they were Grand Nagus. This one is the first female Hupyrian weā€™ve seen.

ā€¢ The Ceremonial Invoice for the Bust of Good Fortune features Ferengi script, first seen in ā€œMĆ©nage Ć  Troiā€.

ā€¢ We see the Lower Deckers working on the Sequoia, the shuttle introduced in ā€œSecond Contactā€. This is the first time weā€™ve seen the shuttle this season.

ā€¢ Mariner is weathering a self-sealing stembolt, a device introduced in ā€œProgressā€ which use has never been made entirely clear.

ā€¢ ā€The Cerritos *is statistically the horniest and least romantically committed crew in Starfleet,ā€ Iā€™d like to know what metrics they use for gauging that, but Starfleet is a notoriously horny organization. See: All of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and SNW.

ā€¢ ā€Maybe I should have Honus and nurse Westlake take a crack at it.ā€ Honus, Westlake, along with Matt are Ransomā€™s self described ā€Friends for life.ā€

ā€¢ The skyline of Ferenginar includes the Tower of Commerce, first mentioned in ā€œProphet Motiveā€ and seen in ā€œFamily Businessā€. The angle here is different, showing more of the capital city and less marshland.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ It is raining pretty heavily on Ferenginar. According to Quark in ā€œLet He Who is Without Sinā€¦ā€ there are 178 different words in the Ferengi language for types of rain.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Thereā€™s a Ferengi shuttle flying over the city. The first Ferengi shuttle on screen was seen in ā€œThe Priceā€

ā€¢ Among the business and billboards we signs for:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ All You Can @#$%!

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Slug-O Cola - ā€œProfit and Laceā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Acquire Pour Homme

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Now Playing: Latinum Lost

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Maximum Oo-Mox Rub Dungeon

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Uncle Quarkā€™s Youth Casino

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Lobeā€™s Lodge

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Museum of Gambling

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Museum of Haggling

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Slug-Nasium

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Ferenginar Historic Public Library

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Quarkā€™s Federation Experience Bar & Grill

ā€¢ One of the ships parked at Lobeā€™s Lodge is one resembling the ship the Ferengi used when they attacked the NX-01 Enterprise in ā€œAcquisitionā€.

ā€¢ There are payboxes for several amenities on Ferenginar for depositing latinum, which we saw introduced in ā€œFamily Businessā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Shuttle parking

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Mini bar

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Hotel bed

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Toilet

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Bathroom access

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Hotel viewscreen

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Brunch restaurant

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Dressing rooms

ā€¢ The confetti canon Parth fires off is shaped similar to a Ferengi hand phaser, like the ones seen in ā€œMĆ©nage Ć  Troiā€.

ā€¢ The viewscreen in in Boimlerā€™s hotel room is very suspiciously familiar, but I canā€™t quite put my finger on it.

ā€¢ Mariner meets up with Quimp whom we previously saw in ā€œEnvoysā€ helping her to scam Boimler into believing he was a capable officer.

ā€¢ ā€I never thought youā€™d dig your way out of crashing that Oberth.ā€ Was it the USS Regina? We may never know.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Presumably the incident with the Oberth-class happened prior to the start of the series, which means that Mariner has been promoted and demoted at least once since then, during the events of ā€œMoist Vesselā€, and Quimp is merely unaware that happened.

ā€¢ Mariner Orders two shots of Cardassian tequila, which presumably can only be produced in the Tequila region of Cardassia Prime.

ā€¢ Mariner also orders a ā€dagger of the mind on the rocks.ā€ ā€œDagger of the Mindā€ was a first season TOS episode, but also part of a line from ā€œMacbethā€.

ā€¢ ā€I like baseball. Itā€™s fun.ā€ Rom was the worst player on the Niners in ā€œTake Me Out to the Holosuiteā€ but Max GrodĆ©nchik played in high school and was good enough that he considered going pro before pursuing a career in acting. During the filming of ā€œTake Me Out to the Holosuiteā€ he had to play left handed because he couldnā€™t convincingly look bad while playing the game with his dominant hand.

ā€¢ Boimler is watching ā€œPog & Dar: Cop Landlordsā€ and one of the tenants has a dog-like pet with horns and antenna like the one seen in ā€œThe Enemy Withinā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Pog, Dar, and the tenant all have Ferengi hand phasers, which were last seen in the TNG episode ā€œBloodlinesā€.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The tenant has muttonchops, and is the only Ferengi weā€™ve seen to have hair of any kind.

ā€¢ ā€Haha, they put commercials in the shows? Itā€™s like mind control.ā€ When Boimler says this line, the wall art of a mountain with some stars above it twinkles, and I canā€™t quite place why itā€™s familiar.

ā€¢ Quarkā€™s Federation Experience Bar & Grill is based on Star Trek: The Experience, a now defunct attraction that used to be at the Hilton in Las Vegas, which did include a Quarkā€™s Bar. Among the features here are:

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ Models of the USS Enterprise D and the USS Voyager hanging from the ceiling, both of which were in Star Trek: The Experience.

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Mugato - ā€œA Private Little Warā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ The Guardian of Forever - ā€œThe City on the Edge of Foreverā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Vulcan wedding venue/gladiatorial arena - ā€œAmok Timeā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ One of the primitive peoples encountered on Taurus II - ā€œThe Galileo Sevenā€

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A holodeck arcade - Ferengi generally refer to them as holosuites

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A rack of red shirts

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Jefferies Tube entrance

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A Ten Forward exhibit

Ā Ā Ā  ā€¢ A ā€blind boxā€ shaped like a Class-F shuttlecraft

ā€¢ Production Error: Despite what the sign says, Rutherford refers to it as *ā€The Starfleet Experience Bar & Grillā€.

ā€¢ One of the Ferengi women eating in the background of Quarkā€™s Federation Experience is nude. Before Zek changed the law leading to the events of ā€œProfit and Laceā€, it was illegal for Ferengi omen to wear clothes.

ā€¢ Rom and Leeta host Vassery and Freeman in the Chamber of Petitioners, seen in ā€œFerengi Love Songsā€.

ā€¢ Capā€™n Freeman tricks Rom into signing a contract which hinges on him bringing Qoā€™noS into the Federation. In the TNG episode, ā€œSamaritan Snareā€, Wesley asks Picard ā€œWas this before the Klingons joined the Federation?ā€ regarding a story of his Academy days, and in ā€œHeart of Gloryā€ we see a Klingon bridge displaying the Federation Emblem alongside that of the Klingon Empire.

ā€¢ Rom reveals that his outrageous demands were all part of a test to see if there were those in the Federation who would respect Ferengi culture. Captain Pike realized the delegation from the Rā€™ongovian Protectorate were doing something similar in ā€œSpock Amokā€.

ā€¢ The Ferengi ā€local authoritiesā€ is wearing a simplified version of the Ferengi uniform introduced in ā€œPeak Performanceā€ and has a military tattoo on his forehead, which we havenā€™t seen since ā€œBloodlinesā€. Heā€™s also wielding an energy whip, introduced in ā€œThe Last Outpostā€.

The question about Cardassian weapons got me trying to remember what they used in STO. Even though itā€™s not canon, I though it might be of interest:

the Cardassian Keldon Cruiser is well-engineered to tackle nearly any combat scenario. It comes pre-equipped with Spiral Wave Disruptor Beam Arrays. These fire a unique energy type that combines the special effects of Phasers and Disruptors, as well as having slightly higher damage and accuracy than other beam weapons.

Interesting. Cardassian starship weapons are most frequently described as phasers arrays. I canā€™t say for certain itā€™s never said in an episode that they also carry disruptors, but I do know that every time I can remember a shipboard armament on a Cardassian vessel being mentioned, itā€™s a phaser.

The DS9 Technical Manual says the Cardassian ships have spiral-wave disruptor arrays and a large aft disruptor cannon ā€“ presumably thatā€™s what the pincer like structure on the back is supposed to be ā€“ but the DS9 Tech Manual is alsoā€¦not up to the standard of quality established by the TNG Technical Manual.

Now I kinda want to check.

Edit: Obviously also not canon, but the Star Trek Adventures Core Rulebook lists the Galor-class as having both phasers and disruptors.
