Hard objects collide inelastically which transfers more force in the opposite direction after the collision. Adding a rag, towel, or pillow softens the surface and the collision is now elastic as some of the force of the jar colliding with the countertop is absorbed by the fibers of the cloth.

Isn’t this backward? Hard objects like billiard balls collide elastically, while soft objects like clay collide inelastically.

Not all non-Newtonian fluids are like this. Some are reversed: They flow like a liquid when pressure is applied, and harden into a solid (or gel) when the pressure is released. I think ketchup is one such example.

Should that not be reserved only for when a local version of the post can’t be found? It seems a bit silly to ask the user every time, when viewing the local version on the user’s home instance is almost always the desired behavour.

Venues which cater to families often mount sinks at multiple heights. It looks like this bathroom has the left sinks mounted at adult height, while the right sinks are mounted at child height. You can see the stairstep in the countertop in photos 3 and 4. The only thing which doesn’t match up is photo 5, which I suspect has been mirrored.

Pretty sure that’s tempura batter, not ice.
