I’m not. I wish they were but I’m not surprised, there’s some good reasons why people might not want to wear one.

I always just say Lemmy, it sounds much more appealing than the fediverse for the uninitiated. Also I don’t really use any other fediverse platforms, so Lemmy is basically the entire fediverse for me.

But I still think the fediverse is a decent name/cool concept (federated universe), plus it’s already got a decent amount of brand recognition so it would pretty rough to start over with something new. It’s a fine name for people who are already familiar and have been using it for a while, it just sounds kinda weird when people first hear about it.

I just had a comment removed for using the M-word. I replaced it with stupid, hopefully that passes the purity test. It occurred to me that dumb could easily be construed as offensive to those who are unable to speak, much more justifiably than the R-word, in my opinion.

Mentally disabled is already quite unacceptable according to some, the current cutting edge of political correctness is probably persons of/with intellectual disability. Which will probably last a couple years before we need to come up with something else.

It’s eerily reminiscent of Orwellian themes of doublespeak and Newspeak. Limiting the functionality of language in order to prevent the expression of undesirable or socially disruptive thoughts.

All of this is also massively complicated by the fact that languages other than English exist. This rapid lexical treadmill that we are currently on is quite certainly discriminatory towards non-native English speakers, because they will inevitably inadvertently use outdated terminology and be judged for it, while those who are privileged enough to be close to the sources of political correctness such as they exist will have an inherent social advantage due to that.

I will rephrase my comment out of respect for persons of intellectual disability who might happen to come across my comment on Lemmy, while still attempting to convey my feelings about hexbear in an attempt to answer the question posed by OP.

Yeah I think a lot of Lemmings tried to give them a chance when we first joined, because we are pretty left leaning already so we figured communists couldn’t be that bad. Unfortunately, they’re actually far more stupid and toxic than anyone could possibly imagine.

I used to recommend for people to make up their own mind whether to block them, but I now feel it’s better to block them immediately, because they’re really just the worst kind of people who will do anything to bring others down to their level of misery.

If the S-word is also problematic, please provide me some guidance as to how I might describe persons of a certain type without offending anybody. I assume the D-word could be construed as offensive towards certain groups as well. I am asking genuinely, because I have no interest in causing anyone undue distress, but there surely must be a way of using the English language to express meaning precisely, otherwise it wouldn’t be a very useful language.

I was just about to say this is the first I’m hearing of this and I have serious reservations about this idea, because moving communities is always tough.

But then I saw the automod tag everybody, and that’s a really nice solution you’ve come up with. I would say maybe send out a few more pings over the next couple months and also post about it on !newcommunities@lemmy.world, just to make sure that everyone gets the message.

Assuming that most users hear about this and subscribe, I think lemm.ee is a great choice for a new home.

Lol I’m pretty shaky on the details too, but I definitely think there’s some really good ideas in there once you can parse all the philosophical lingo. I hadn’t even heard about the rhizome until you mentioned it, but it does seem like a useful concept for sure.

Yeah jealousy was not the best word to use. And also it’s understandable that people don’t want to cheer on the US or Americans at all.

But on the other hand, the change that we are all looking for is going to have to ultimately come from Americans on some level. There isn’t any plausible way that another nation can violate the geopolitical status quo in a major way without the US leveraging its economic and military power to prevent things from being disrupted. That’s been proven many times by all of the interventions the US has done towards communist states and parties all around the world. Any kind of revolutionary political or economic movement in another country is likely to get sabotaged by American espionage, military force, or economic sanctions.

So at the end of the day, acting all angry towards Americans just reinforces the current system, because it causes people to dig in their heels and change from a progressive mindset to a defensive one. You need to have Americans on the inside to effect change, and Lemmings are the type of Americans who are already walking that path, only to get shoved off the path by tankies and others who continually abuse them, until they get sick of it and return to the corporate internet, where they can at least feel some superficial validation. In an ideal world, people wouldn’t be so weak-minded, but they are, and we need to understand that if we are interested in changing their opinions, and ultimately the changing the nature of the government that they allow to exist.

Less rooted in reality, but more offensive, and thus more justifiable for removal. Flat earthers aren’t causing any real world problems afaik, while people denying climate change and ADHD can actually cause real problems for real human beings.

I feel that someone needs to be able to counter the increasing tendency towards absolute ideological purity that is strangling this platform, and if people don’t know me from a hole in the wall, it’ll be that much easier to discredit me when I try to criticize the circlejerking that goes on here.

In other words, I’m a human being, and I have opinions, and I’m flawed. But that doesn’t mean I can’t or don’t try my best to act objectively and in the best interests of the server when I’m performing my admin duties. That’s reality, and hiding behind alt accounts just to pretend that I’m a pure paragon of justice on my admin account isn’t really my style, and I don’t really see how it would benefit anyone.

And just in response to your comment specifically, I don’t view my actions over the past few days as having been “spicy” takes, or exhibiting an attitude of partying in a frat house. Some of the things I said were quite frank, yes, but I only came out and said them because I felt that people needed to hear them and respond to them for the good of Lemmy.

As much as people won’t ever believe me in this, I probably wouldn’t have even said any of that crap if I was just a normal user, because personally, I don’t really get upset easily, and I don’t go out of my way seeking confrontation. It’s the fact that I am an admin that led me to speak out, because I feel like these behaviors are harmful to my users who I’m supposed to advocate for and protect, and harmful to the success of Lemmy, which I’m deeply invested in through my role as an admin.

I disagree, I would remove any of those comments as a mod and think nothing of it. Again, you’re creating imaginary problems that don’t actually exist yet. If and when something like that happens, and an admin intervenes to restore a comment that you deleted, then go ahead and start complaining.

But I wouldn’t hold my breath, that’s not the behavior this policy was attempting to address, according to my understanding. I think the OP was maybe worded in a slightly confusing way, which is why so many people are taking different interpretations of it.

Yeah it’s bad, so bad that even trying to call it out gets you attacked. I definitely agree that there could be shills, but surely there have to be more real users than shills?
