As a non-American, I was very confused for a bit. Why are senior citizens needing to pick songs? What are they graduating from?

32·19 days agoWow, doomer.
Just want to suggest Kagi, because their ethos is essentially this, and I would say their search results are considerably better than any other engine I’ve tried. It’s been well worth the money so far.

8·30 days agoIt’s fascinating how different access can be in places where Robellus aren’t the only options. I live in a town of 6000, 1+ hours away from any major centre and I get 1 gig fibre, all because of Sasktel.
It still amazes me how utilities can be privately owned. There’s literally no benefit to it.

Basically Organic Maps’ private owners planned to commercialize and make components of the application closed source. Very much not in the Open Source spirit that had been touted, for which many external contributors donated their time. So, those who actually gave a shit about being open source forked the project into CoMaps. That is why the two apps very much look the same, because they more or less are, aside from the intentions of their developers.

6·3 months agoDigital devices will always be a potential distraction, even with just simple calling and messaging. What amazes me most though, is how far we’ll stretch to avoid regulating the actual actors causing the most harm (social media).
The only drawback is that most smart home devices aren’t on the UPS, so if power goes out, you still lose most connected devices.
I run many of the usual suspects, but I would say Home Assistant is on the top of the list.
- Integrates with seemingly endless smart home devices
- Make automations that make your house seem like magic
- Make it look just how you want it to
- and best of all, it costs
numerous hours of tinkeringnothing!

2·3 months agoI’m well aware of how heat pumps work. What I meant by that was that some electrical grids, like Saskatchewan, for example, have a high GHG intensity. So, despite a heat pump’s high efficiency, it can still result in higher overall GHG emissions than if the same amount of heat were delivered by burning natural gas in a condensing furnace.
Now Saskatchewan has been making good progress on cleaning up their grid, so it might not quite be the case now, but energy and GHG modelling I did a couple years ago showed just the case above.

1·3 months agoUnfortunately, Trump’s walls don’t contain pollution, and industries use that local lack of regulation to lobby other governments, as in, “look, we can do that in the US, why can’t we do it here?”

Except Kagi. Kagi is actually good.
