1. It gets freed instantly when your apps need more memory
2. Until then, it increases your overall system performance by avoiding the need to read from storage (making it somewhere around 10ish times faster).

My current router is an ancient laptop running NixOS. Ethernet in via the Ethernet port, and out via a USB converter. It probably could serve as a WiFi AP too, but currently I have a dumb OpenWRT in bridge mode for that.

The same laptop also selfhosts Prosody, coturn, LiveKit and stuff.

I don’t really see how a proper router would be better than that.

I do that. Teams webclient works fine, Office web version suffices for basic things, VS Code works perfectly on Linux, and for the rest, I have a https://devbox.microsoft.com/

Running Linux affords me the possibility to be snide when inevitably something fails to work right on coworkers’ Windows machines. When my Linux box fails to work right, at least I know how to fix it.

Which other options did you consider? By any chance, could you compare it with Element or Snikket or Conversations (or other Matrix or SMPP clients}?

Yes. Works fine. PostmarketOS, though, not Lineage. It runs an offsite monitoring system for the rest of my selfhosted stuff - Prometheus, Grafana, stuff.

It’s a lot easier to avoid dumb than increase smart, though, while both raise the average!
