17·23 hours agoI’d also like to know. Sellers can know when you’re using a popular VPN service or have DeGoogled, but I don’t know how they may use that information. Perhaps they’ll try to punish you into submission by jacking prices to the moon or refusing to serve their website altogether. Reddit and some other sites already block VPNs.

There will never be a silver bullet, because this will be an endless arms race between sellers and savvy consumers.

29·23 hours agoI don’t think this guy has hacked surveillance pricing in ways that are practicably replicable, but his video has piqued my curiosity.
Edit to add: There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of evidence-based, practical advice currently, except to shop in physical stores and to comparison shop. https://www.kqed.org/news/12088157/surveillance-pricing-is-making-life-more-expensive-heres-how-it-works-and-what-you-can-do

University research on human subjects follow a number of elaborate privacy rules, including those of the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects. Researchers aren’t interested in our individual data; they’re interested in our data in aggregate for statistical analysis.

This is like the silly rationalization some religious people have for atheists, that we’re just angry at god.

Science@lemmy.ml•Carbon dioxide overload, detected in human blood, suggests a potentially toxic atmosphere within 50 years
4·2 days agoI have no idea what the cost, efficacy, or availability of this product is. https://hydrocell.fi/en/air-cleaners-carbon-dioxide-filters-and-dac-appliances/uniqfresh-air-cleaners/
The only maintenance required is changing of the activated-carbon filter every six months, and replacement of the HEPA filter every five years. In normal use, the carbon dioxide filter cassette has a lifetime of at least 15 years.

8·2 days agoWe examined the impact of indoor plants on air quality parameters in office environments, focusing on relative humidity, indoor air temperature, and CO2 concentration. Our findings demonstrated that, while indoor plants significantly increase relative humidity, they had a negligible effect on indoor air temperature and CO2 concentration in the offices we sampled. This suggests that while plants can enhance comfort in dry indoor environments, their role in regulating temperature and CO2 levels is limited.
I guess I’d need to invest in a CO2 scrubber.
I think/hope this is a good piece for those whose minds need a few things spelled out for them in order to expand beyond their personal, colloquial experience.
My first time reading about dialectical/historical materialism was a funny experience, now that I think about it. It was mostly spelling out my own understanding of the world to me. I could have saved a lot of time if I’d read them decades ago instead of reinventing the wheel.
