Me too!
Me too!
I mean, over the years the scroll bar has got less and less visible. Maybe these people don’t even realise it exists.
Are there enough trampolines on earth that we could reasonably expect that at any time there is at least one person in the upper part of their jump on a trampoline?
I mean 30,000 feet is 9km. The Kármán line is 100km. The ISS is at an average altitude of 400km.
It’s a bit like saying people in planes don’t count as flying because then people on trampolines should count.
My plan is to have a self hosted, private site for the family. In the old days, people made their own sites and others could visit. I see this as a replacement for social media - instead of using facebook to catch up on family, this would be a self-hosted alternative. People could still use facebook for other things if they wanted, but this would be somewhere you would know you’d see all the posts people were making, with no ads or manipulative algorithms.
Despite all the options, it’s actually a hard thing to find a good solution. There there is promise in some so I haven’t given up hope yet.
In terms of public sharing, I see Lemmy as one form of that. Anyone can host their own instance but we all share with each other. No ads, algorithms are known and published. For things more like a personal site, it’s never been easier to self-host things.
I still use email and RSS.
If you want to read blogs and minor websites, maybe check out kagis “small web” index (this is free access I believe): https://kagi.com/smallweb
The real web is still there, and probably has as many users as it did 25 years ago, but the average person doesn’t use it. Remember the average person didn’t use the internet much at all 25 years ago.
One thing I want to do is try to create a space for family to hang out. Self-hosted. No concerns about data mining or trolls, just a personal space for us.
They don’t have to use it but starting from the right group, I think they will, many of them perhaps only because it will become the only place to see photos of our kids. Just need the right platform.
Another comment has this down to a bug in IBus, which is for supporting typing non-latin characters.

So I get a proper solution, mostly (I think a proper proper solution would be having the bug fixed)
Nice, that does seem to be the issue! By searching for that environment variable, I also found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1eqrnjr/psa_recent_ibus_releases_introduce_noticeable/
It seems IBus is the cause of this lag. I have made the change as the post you linked suggested, and it seems to have fixed it! I found some people having issues with the value of 0 and so will try out for a while to see if the hybrid 2 value is stable.
I have (sort of) solved the issue. When holding a key down, the events seem to be firing faster than the games can keep up with. The longer a key is held down the more it queues up. So if I hold left for a while, then suddenly switch to right, it seems to have a backlog of left events to get through before it processes the right event.
I went into the system settings and changed the keyboard repeat speed to be a bit lower. Now it seems to send events at a speed the games can keep up with, even if I’m holding down a key.
I’m not sure if this counts as a real solution but it seems to solve the issue for me, and I doubt I’ll notice the slightly slower repeat frequency (I think games are only listening for the up/down events so the repeat frequency probably doesn’t affect them).
So this is a bit of a dumb solution, but I went to the accessibility settings in the OS and dropped the repeat frequency a bit. Now it seems to work fine!
It did seem like the events were triggering faster than the games could process them, so dropping the repeat speed a little stopped the events queueing up.

No, it’s the desktop edition. It’s a laptop, but I have a wireless keyboard that I plugged in and tried. It didn’t help, same thing.
One thing I noticed is that it appears to happen only when holding down a key. So for example, if I tap left then tap right, the character reacts instantly. But if I hold down left and the character is going left, then I switch to pressing right instead, it can take over a second to react. Like it’s not able to process the key presses as fast as they are being generated.
That being said, there isn’t anything obvious in the dmesg output. You ran that command WHILE the problem was happening, right?
Yes, as close as I could. I had the game open and while using it the keyboard actions were delayed. Then I switched to the terminal to run the commands. So I guess not while I was pressing keys in the game, but I did it at a time when the keyboard controls were lagging.

At the same time as installing Bazzite, I also upgraded to 64GB RAM.
Here’s the output of free -m
when the game is being problematic.

I am sure you’re right about it being resource contrained. It seems to get worse over time, and the GPU reports 100% all the time while the game is running. Just trying to work out if there is something I can change to make it happier.
Thanks! evtest shows keyboard events happening immediately. The game seems to be the one slow to respond.
Edit: also what’s up Dave on the far side of the world!
I’m actually on the close side of the world 🤯
Oh shit, I think you’re right!
Now that a stretch my memory back decades, I seem to recall I never extensively used 2000, it was ME.
I agree XP was good
I seem to recall something about XP not being good at the start, and it wasn’t until about SP2 that it reached it’s famed quality. But now I can’t seem to find anything about it.
I think it’s reasonable to respond with something like “I’m really not a kid person, I don’t much enjoy talking about kids or being around kids. I’m still happy to meet for coffee, but maybe we plan to keep it a short chat and see how it goes?”
They’re mostly just going to be the focus of the occasion because they need constant attention, and I don’t really like kids in general. And, if they cry or act up and attract attention I will hate that.
Many places will have toy areas for kids, maybe you can find one (or ask if they can suggest one since they are more likely to know which ones nearby have that). A 2 year old can probably keep themselves mostly entertained off and on for 30 mins or an hour, depending on the specific kid and if there are a good selection of toys. The 6 month old will need more attention but may well spend a lot of the time sleeping.
An old friend/aquaintance I’ve not spoken to in a few years popped up recently and we got chatting a little over text.
I don’t want to put you off, but I’d probably have a plan for what you’re going to do if they start a MLM pitch.
2 years for me as well!
