I just started reading The Gathering Storm by Brandon Sanderson, book twelve of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series. I’ve never read any Sanderson before, so it’ll be interesting to see the tonal differences in writing.

I’m reading The Devil’s Elixirs by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Published in 1815, it’s a weird gothic horror story about a fallen monk. It’s surprisingly psychologically astute, but I have no idea where it’s going to go from here. I like it. It’s available on Project Gutenberg if you’re interested.

I mean, I love the series, but its brand of chaos, insanity, humor and obscenity is definitely not for everyone. If you can accept it and go with its flow, there’s some really good bits in there.

I think you might like Dean Koontz. I haven’t read him in years, but I remember Phantoms being pretty good.

I’m reading Warren Ellis’s Transmetropolitan. An old favorite of mine, this comic book, heavily inspired by Hunter S. Thompson, has many themes that are all too relevant even today.

Well, for example, upgrading between releases is done by manually editing sources.list and some other steps, and there’s no easy tool for that. This is not difficult, exactly, but for people with little experience it’s a bit daunting. Debian in general isn’t the most new user friendly distro, in my experience. Distros like Mint and Ubuntu make the Debian experience slightly easier. Not that Debian is some esoteric system.

Well, what about just using Debian? It’s a bit hassle, maybe, but if you have prior Linux experience, you’ll be fine.

I’m currently reading Derf Backderf’s graphic novel My Friend Dahmer, a book about his friend, the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, whom he knew in high school.

I’m thinking I’ll read comics for a while, and plan to read Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Warren Ellis’s Transmetropolitan. I’ve read all of these great works before, but I feel like a bit of comfort reading right now.

My guess is that the stress of manoeuvring himself into a position he is woefully unqualified for and incapable of handling is finally getting to him. The crushing reality of your own inadequacy would be too much for anyone but the most hardened psychopaths. What can he do? He knows it’s just a matter of time until the jig is up, and there’s no way he’s getting any more suitable for the role. Drinking yourself silly keeps the nasty thoughts of self-recrimination at bay, and gives an elusive moment of reprieve.

But you know your time is up, Kash. You know you’re a charlatan, a clown, who has no tools to fix the situation you built for yourself in your hubris. Do the right thing: Resign. For yourself, for your family, for your fucking country, for the world. Go home. No more trying to please the unpleasable man who turns on a dime.

I’m reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I think I read this for school a long time ago. Good book.
