My wife hates our “ugly” fridge that came with our house. It’s about 25 years old works perfectly, even the ice maker. She is a frugal person that can’t justify replacing it until it breaks. Yet it keeps on ticking. Everyone I know who has a fridge made in the last 10 years has a broken ice maker. I’m happy with the “ugly” perfectly functional fridge.

Soapbox@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unexpectedly useful item you've ever bought under $20?English2·2 days agoThat’s true. It hasn’t mattered for me, as I have never removed any from the lights I blocked with it. I would assume the purpose made stickers would be better about residue if they need to be removed.

If they were actually going after armed gang members, they probably would be getting shot. But as we can tell by the fact they are hiding their faces, they are chicken shit losers cosplaying as tough guys targeting defenseless people because it’s easier.

Soapbox@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unexpectedly useful item you've ever bought under $20?English7·3 days agoBlue tack is very handy stuff. But you know, they make blackout stickers for exactly this application. They look a lot nicer. Though personally, I just cut little pieces of black electrical tape.

Soapbox@lemmy.zipto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is that random movie that you watched multiple times throughout your childhood only because your family happened to own it's DVD (or VHS) ?2·5 days agoHackers.
The only reason we bought it was because my dad’s cousin was an extra in one of the classroom scenes. As a result I watched more times than I could count, and love cyberpunk stuff.
I bought: Drova - Forsaken Kin, Kamiko, Spiritfarer, & Beseige

Soapbox@lemmy.zipto Trippin' Through Time@lemmy.ca•Why not use LibreOffice Calc instead?English5·8 days agoA few years back, someone at corporate made an Excel based “program” for planning our trade shows. It was the most rage inducing rickety ass bullshit contraption I have ever had to deal with. It was basically a data entry wizard GUI for a spreadsheet. But it would crash every 2-3 entries, and lose all the data that had been added since the last save. The only way to save the data involved closing it and restarting it. So I had to close/reopen after every entry just to keep from having to risk redoing it all multiple times.
Terrible drill bit. Mediocre taffy puller. Adequate paint mixer.
One of my best friends has a mild shellfish allergy. He swells up and turns red, but it’s not bad enough to require an EpiPen. On multiple occasions, I have seen him go nuts at a shellfish buffet until he balloons up and looks like a tomato, then he pops a Benadryl and sleeps it off.
Personally, I hate shellfish. Especially the smell of it. So I lie to people and tell them I am allergic, so they shut the fuck up about getting me to try it.

The republicans and libertarians despise public institutions. They want everything to be privatized. They cannot stand that an oligarch is not profiting from the service the USPS provides.
They are constantly trying to undermine the USPS to make it struggle so they can point and say, "Look! Look! See! Government services are bad! We must cut this wasteful spending and outsource mail delivery to Amazon Mail™ "

Yes, I know I could buy a used one on ebay but I’d rather have a new one.
Most Americans opt to have their employer take the taxes out and send them to the government for them. But its not required, we can choose to receive all of our pay and take responsibility for sending the government their cut ourselves. Its a PITA, but some opt to put their taxes in an account to earn interest for a year before paying the government. They view paying monthly as “giving the government a free loan.”
When you have your employer do it for you, your pay stub breaks down the amount you started with and how much was taken out for each tax. We can see what we are paying in tax on every paycheck which is why so many Americans complain about it.
