  • Honestly probably both. It is also pretty frequent these days. Syria and South Africa are adopting solar for similar reasons as Pakistan. Russia cutting off most of Europe from fossil fuels accelerated the transition. The funniest is probably the current US war against Iran, which is ultimately about oil and gas, but by blocking a good part of the global supply of that ends up making them worth less in the long term.

  • Forests are not necessarily the most diverse and natural ecosystem in certain regions. When you go back time with a similar climate to today and no humans, you would have had straight tusk elephants, some of the largest the world has ever seen in what is today Germany. Add to that Irish elk, which 4.5m from bottom to the top of the antlers tall and European forms of lions, leopards and rhinos.

These species would have kept Germany a much more open landscape, with some forested areas, but still open grassland. That is why a lot of native species require open grassland to survive. For example the bustard does not live in forests, but so do many insects. They often survived thanks to pastures keeping land somewhat open.

That is also true for many other parts of the world. Forests are not always ideal.

  • Omsk was last hit 26.0.8.2024, Moscow 11.03.2025 and Taneco 11.01.2025. The largest ones also have multiple production lines. So they can still operate, but at reduced capacity. Ukraine should try to shut down as much refinery capacity as possible and export. So Russia has to close oil wells and has fuel shortages. The country is massive after all, so it takes a lot to transport fuel throughout it.
