The main problem is not even the presence of machine learning content detection. It’s a lot of things predating any sort of machine learning development:
- “Screw consent” mentality: feature is by default on.
- Product tying: Apple doesn’t need to show to the user that the feature is desirable, since it’s tied to its OS.
- Leaking data: feature could be reasonably developed to run locally, but instead it sends data to someone else’s computer aka “the cloud”.
“You can turn off Enhanced Visual Search at any time on your iOS or iPadOS device by going to Settings > Apps > Photos. On Mac, open Photos and go to Settings > General”
I haven’t accepted iCloud ToS changes in many months, and I refuse to update to iOS 18, because of AI bullshit.
I’ll probably end up back on android over this… at least I can get a phone that can be stripped down to basics… (don’t ask why I got an iPhone at all… mistakes were made…)
Good luck with the Google bullshit 🫡
