Toronto police say a dangerous offender who was released from prison earlier this month is now residing in Toronto.
The justice system needs to refocus to rehabilitation first. This punitive system benefits nobody. Of course making people live in grey cells where all their humanity is stripped from them doesn’t make them better. It was never supposed to.
The Finnish model is obviously more successful and beneficial to the community at whole.

Funny. Another guy who was considered an extreme danger to the community (Durham Region), because he was a violent rapist, was also said to be a danger to kids.
He was arrested, released, arrested, released several times, as if he suddenly became a law abiding citizen in between.
Our justice system benefits criminals more than it protects everyone else.
Release should only be considered if the person is deemed to not longer be a threat to society. In that sense, sentencing shouldn’t be based on a predetermination timeframe.
Then why did they release him?
@twopi@lemmy.ca They had to, it’s the law. Which is probably too lenient for such cases. One slip and hopefully he’s back in crowbar hotel. Prohibition on drinking, drinking establishments and drugs. So be on the lookout for this child predator.
Then can we change the law if it’s too lenient?

Statutory release is not a bad thing. Many parolees use it to its fullest effect and don’t break the rules imposed on them during parole. They live in transitional housing and are monitored by housing staff and parole officers.
